It can be such as stress when you are lost in a foreign country. Imagine, you and your partner are in Paris, you want to go to a restaurant for a romantic dinner but you are lost and have neither your phone nor a map… Quel dommage! (What a shame!). Let’s see together in that podcast, vocabulary about directions in French. Even if you think asking directions in French is not so difficulty and with a bit of vocabulary you can ask anything, it will be more challenging for you to understand the person taking to you.

Directions

A : Bonjour, excusez-moi, où est la pharmacie, s’il vous plaît?
Hello, excuse me, where is the pharmacy, please?

B : Allez tout droit, puis deuxième sortie au rond-point et après tournez à gauche au feu tricolore.
Go straight on, then second exit at the roundabout and after turn on the left at the traffic lights.

A : Très bien, est-ce que c’est loin ou près d’ici ?
Perfect, is it far or near from here?

B : C’est près d’ici.
It is near from here.

A : Merci ! Et où se trouve le cinéma ?
Thank you ! And where is the cinema?

B : Le cinéma se trouve à côté de la pharmacie.
The cinema is next to the pharmacy.

A : C’est parfait, je vous remercie.
Perfect, thank you.

B : Avec plaisir, au revoir.
My pleasure, bye.

Do you know where is the train station? = Est-ce que vous savez où est la gare ?
Where are the toilets, please? = Où sont les toilettes, s’il vous plait ?
Where can I find the bank? = Où est-ce que je peux trouver la banque ?
Is there a bus station near here? = Est-ce qu’il y a un arrêt de bus près d’ici ?
Is the supermarket far from here? = Est-ce que le supermarché est loin d’ici ?
Is the museum near here, please? Est-ce que le musée est près d’ici, s’il vous plait ?
How do I do to find the beach? Comment est-ce que je fais pour trouver la plage ?

On the left = A gauche
On the right = A droite
In front of… = En face de…
Next to… = A coté de…
Around the = Au coin de la rue
At the end of the street = Au bout de la rue
The bridge = Le pont
The traffic light = Le feu tricolore
The roundabout = Le rond-point
The next street to the right = La prochaine rue à droite
Cross the pedestrian zone = Traverser le passage piéton
Go straight = Aller tout droit
