The benefits of French learning Apps

Language learning applications are very popular nowadays. They offer grammar, vocabulary practice and emphasize on the importance of repetition. As you progress, you earn virtual rewards to boost your motivation to go further and further. Also, you can follow at your own rhythm. You do not have the pressure to be with other students that learn faster than you. The most important is to do it regularly and learn something everyday.

In conclusion, applications can definitely help you to learn a language such as French. They are a good addition to private tutoring and my blog but they are limited after a while. For instance, it is not going to advise you on how to improve your speaking.

In this article, I am going to compare two applications that I have tested for you, Duolingo and Memrise, but you should know there are a lot more!

The comparison of French learning Apps

Duolingo

Pros

With Duolingo, you can set up your objectives at the beginning. That is a plus because it will motivate you to reach your goal. The main focus of Duolingo is based on general language learning which will allow you to have general French knowledge. Furthermore, you can hear words and sentences with this App.

Cons

The downside of Duolingo is that the voice is robotic compared to other Apps where the voice is natural but you still understand very well. Also, the number of courses is limited so once you finished all the exercises of the App you cannot continue further. Finally, Duolingo is slightly more difficult when you start learning a language compared to other Apps.

Memrise

Pros

In contrary to Duolingo, the voice is more natural with Memrise when listening to words and sentences. Since Memrise is mainly the learning of vocabulary, you can follow the number of words you learnt and that is quite motivating! Also, you can add memo in a notes field, it is good for you to create sentences to remember these words better. In my opinion, Memrise is easier when you start learning a language than Duolingo. Finally, the most amazing thing about Memrise is that the courses are infinite so you will never finish it! You can learn French for life, without lacking vocabulary 😉

Cons

Memrise is focused on vocabulary so it is more specific but it depends on what you are looking for to learn. So it can also be considered a positive, depending on your own learning requirements. Also, you cannot set up objectives at the beginning as you can with Duolingo, but you still have the rewarding format to help in your motivation.

Recap of the benefits and comparison of French learning Apps

In summary, language learning Apps are definitely useful. If I were you, I would use both, Duolingo and Memrise bring something different to your French learning experience. However, I would not recommend to use more than two Apps because you won’t become fluent if you only use Apps.
