Le Petit Prince

The little Prince

Le Petit Prince” was first published in 1943. It is one of the most famous children books in French history. It was written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry who was a French writer, poet, journalist and aviator. He was born in an aristocratic family in Lyon. During a mission in 1944, he disappears with his plane in the sea. It is only in 2003 that his plane was identified in Marseille. The name of the airport in Lyon was named after him.

“Le Petit Prince” is a story about a pilot who breaks-down in Sahara. While trying to repair his plane, he meets the little Prince who comes from another planet, the asteroid B612. Then, the little Prince asks the pilot to draw him a sheep “Dessine-moi un mouton”. Before arriving on earth the little Prince visited other planets and met other people.

Although considered as a children’s book, it is an entertaining story for adults. I highly recommend you this book that will provide you with the foundation to start your French learning journey, introducing new vocabulary that you may not be familiar with. You will discover through that book the philosophy behind it which describes situations applying to our daily life.

Asterix” is a “bande-dessinée” (“comic strip” in English) written by René Goscinny. This takes place in a small village and Gaulish fight against Roman occupation during the era of Julius Caesar. 38 volumes have now been released. Comics are colorful, containing drawings and short sentences so it can be a good alternative for your language learning if you feel anxious to learn French with books.

The Three Musketeers

“Tous pour un et un pour tous” (“All for one and one for all” in English) from the Three Musketeers, is a historical novel written by Alexandre Dumas, a French author, in 1844. The Three Musketeers are swordsmen and fight for justice. It tells the adventures of d’Artagnan who goes to Paris hoping to join the Musketeers. Since d’Artagan cannot join them straight away, he becomes friend with 3 musketeers and will be involved in affairs of state.
